Carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide is a colorless gas having faint sharp odor and a sour taste. It is present in earth’s atmosphere at low concentration and also acts as a greenhouse gas.
Carbon dioxide is used:
- In solid and liquid form for refrigeration and cooling.
- As a working material in fire extinguishers
- In making carbonated beverages, mineral water, and beer.
- To achieve a higher welding rate when used along with Argon, thereby reducing the need for post weld treatment.
- In chemical process industry as a raw material in the production of methanol and urea
- In hospitals as insufflations gas for minimal invasive surgery such as laparoscopy, endoscopy and arthroscopy.
- In its solid form (dry ice) to package food items that must remain cold or frozen, such as ice cream or biological samples, without the use of mechanical cooling.
